About

I’m an illustrator based in Northern Ireland, specialising in detailed pen-and-ink pointillism with a love of fantasy, folklore and science fiction. My work often blends realistic rendering with impossible or surreal subjects and, whenever I can, a sense of humour.

I grew up reading comics like Spider-Man and Judge Dredd, then graduated to the worlds of artists such as Edmund Dulac, Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Moebius, Wally Wood and Maxfield Parrish. Studying their work helped me develop both my imagination and my technique, and that mix of realism and the fantastical still runs through everything I do.

At school I became fascinated by pointillism after seeing an older student’s portrait of Prince made entirely of dots. I tried the technique myself and never really stopped. Pointillism demands patience, but it offers incredible control; you build up tone dot by dot, watching the image slowly appear - and there’s no rubbing out.

On the Technical Side

Today I create my pointillism illustrations using a Rotring Isograph 0.18mm nib technical drawing pen on150g/m smooth cartridge paper.

For cartooning I use a medium to fine cartridge nib dip pen with India drawing inks, again on 150g/m smooth cartridge paper, as well as a Windsor and Newton series 7 Sable Hair water colour brush.

The result is highly detailed black-and-white work with a timeless, almost storybook quality.
